Jen’s Perspective: Learning, Listening, and Building Bridges
Jen Cole, CEO of The Fresh Perspective Group, shares her insights:
“Throughout my career of supporting nonprofits and serving as the board chair of a small community science center, I’ve seen firsthand just how complicated the funding space is. But it wasn’t until I got a peek behind the scenes—hearing the advice given to high-net-worth individuals—that I realized the focus often leans heavily on legacy. The conversations are about preserving and allocating wealth for the future, tax strategies, and long-term financial growth. What often gets lost, though, is the urgent need to get those funds flowing to nonprofits now. The challenge is figuring out how to move this money responsibly but quickly to support organizations making an immediate impact.
The idea sounds simple: we need to build bridges between funders and the nonprofits delivering essential services. We must create a self-sustaining ecosystem where resources flow seamlessly, whether to museums, youth programs, food banks, or job readiness initiatives—because the need is great everywhere. And the first step? It’s all about listening and learning from those who are already making a difference.
Over the past 15 years working in nonprofit tech, my focus was primarily on individual giving/fundraising, but I have come to deeply appreciate the vital role that foundations and funders play in the broader social systems ecosystem. My perspective truly broadened in 2020 when I met Pamela. She passionately advocated for better systems that not only serve nonprofits effectively but also measure and amplify the impact of foundations. I couldn’t imagine a better partner to bring The Fresh Perspective Group’s Philanthropy vision to life.”
