Breaking Barriers: Why Women and Girls in Science Matter to Me

Every February 11th, we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day that holds personal meaning for me. As a mom of two young kids, I see every day how science fuels curiosity, creativity and problem-solving. It’s not just about memorizing facts; it’s about learning to ask questions, think critically, and explore the world with an open mind—skills I want my kids to carry with them as they grow.  

But beyond my personal connection, this day is about something bigger: making space for women and girls in science and technology. Women from all walks of life bring unique perspectives to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and the world is better for it. We need their ideas, their leadership, and their innovation —because when more voices are heard, the possibilities for progress expand.  

Women-Led STEM Nonprofits That Inspire Me 

Celebrating women in STEM also means celebrating the organizations where they lead. Here are three incredible women I know who are making an impact:  

Dione Chambers – Executive Director, Okanagan Science Centre 

Dione brings over eight years of nonprofit management experience and a strong background in Chemistry. She studied Chemical Technology at NAIT, where she entered the field of science specializing in nanotechnology. While her work on microscopic secret projects is behind her, she now leads the Okanagan Science Centre —creating a space where curiosity and innovation thrive.  Her leadership is proof that science isn’t just about the lab; it's about making knowledge accessible to the next generation.   

Kayley Evans – Calgary Zoo 

Kayley started her career as a primatologist researching wild spider monkeys in Central America. Over a decade later Kayley is now at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo amplifying their mission through her strategic and comprehensive approach to interpretive planning. She creates immersive visitor experiences, both on and off site, that bring conservation science to life. By making science engaging and accessible, Kayley shows how storytelling and education are powerful tools for change. 

Why Women in STEM Matter 

For me, this isn’t just about science—it’s about building a better future. I want my kids to grow up in a world where they see women leading in STEM, solving the world’s toughest challenge, and inspiring others to do the same. It’s about ensuring that women and girls from all walks of life know their voices matter.
